Church Ministries Ideas
Church ministries are gifts that the Lord Jesus has given to His church. Romans 12:6 states:
“Having then gifts that vary according to the grace that is given to us.”
But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it. This is why it says:
“When he ascended on high, he led captives in his train and gave gifts to men.” (NIV) Ephesians 4: 7-8
I personally prefer the expression ‘church ministries’ to ‘christian ministries’ simply because ministries belong to the church; they were given by the Lord Jesus as both gifts and graces to His Church. The interesting part about church ministries is the fact that the definition suggests that they are not things that we deserve or work to acquire. There are simply gifts and as with any gift the best response is to simply receive it, be grateful and enjoy it.
It is important to understand that each one of us, each believer in Christ, has been given a gift, a ministry according to the grace of God. Each believer has a burning desire to serve the Lord and be useful in the church. But how do you find out which ministry you have been called to or given? How do you identify your ministry? Once identified how do you use it? How do you function in it? This is what the second part of the 3-fold mandate of Global Church Ministries International deals with.
What are church ministries for?
This is a very interesting question because Ephesians 4: 7 tells us when those ministry gifts were given to the church. What does this mean? It means that Jesus performed the same act that Elijah performed in II Kings 2:11
Here we see Elijah ascending into heaven like Jesus and he was separated and transported by chariots for fire. Here is the interesting part,
12 And Elisha saw it, and he cried out, “My father, my father, the chariot of Israel and its horsemen!” So he saw him no more. And he took hold of his own clothes and tore them into two pieces. 13 He also took up the mantle of Elijah that had fallen from him, and went back and stood by the bank of the Jordan. 14 Then he took the mantle of Elijah that had fallen from him, and struck the water, and said, “Where is the LORD God of Elijah?” And when he also had struck the water, it was divided this way and that; and Elisha crossed over.
15 Now when the sons of the prophets who were from Jericho saw him, they said, “The spirit of Elijah rests on Elisha.” And they came to meet him, and bowed to the ground before him.
Elisha removed his own clothes and tore them. Why did he do that? He was simply getting rid of his own ability and strength to accomplish what God called him to do. The second interesting thing we see is that he takes the mantle of Elijah, which is the picture of the double portion of his anointing and put it on. He went further than that, we read in verse 14 that, ‘he also had struck the water, it was divided this way and that’.
This is significant because what Elisha did there was exactly what Elijah did in verse 8 with the same mantle and we read, ‘Now Elijah took his mantle, rolled itup, and struck the water; and it was divided this way and that’
If you are getting confused and wondering, where the connection is with church ministries, then, don’t worry, it will be made clear very shortly, just follow me. You see, just as Elijah left his mantle to Elisha to continue the work that he started, Jesus also when he ascended, He gave His Body , the Church, ministry gifts so that the church would complete what he started.
It is interesting to see that Elisha started where Elijah ended his ministry. He performed the same miracle with the same anointing and ministry gift. In fact he did more than Elijah because he received the double portion of Elijah’s anointing. Jesus said the same to us, his church, he said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.
Jesus said that we would so greater work because he was going to the Father. As he ascended to the Father after his resurrection, he left his mantle behind; he didn’t go with it. As it is written,
When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive, And gave gifts to men… He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ.Ephesians4: 7&11-12
The mantle that Jesus left behind is to us the ministry gifts that we call church ministries and He gave them to the church so the church can be built. All the church ministries together contain the fullness of Jesus’ ministry. Each church ministry carry a specific anointing and it is that anointing that teaches the anointed ones to minister and serve his body according to his will. It is the anointing that gives power, wisdom and creativity to build the body of Christ. We will look at the creativity side under church ministries ideas later.
Here at Global Church Ministries International, we don’t argue about Church ministries because they are Christ gifts to His church. We embrace them because we long to see the fullness of Christ in the Church. This is why we love helping believers identify those ministry gifts in their lives and also help equip them to walk in them fully.
I hope you have enjoyed reading a bit about church ministries and that you are inspired to embrace them more in your life. If you believe that God has called you and need help to grow and rise in the fullness of your calling, then you are welcome to either join us or contact us.
